Five Elements Shiatsu
Five Element Shiatsu is a style of Shiatsu based on the philosophy of the Five Elements from Traditional Chinese Medicine. It views the body, mind, and emotions as expressions of five natural forces found in nature.
The Five Elements
Each element corresponds to organ systems, emotions, seasons, and qualities of energy:
-
Wood – Liver & Gallbladder | growth, vision, direction
-
Fire – Heart & Small Intestine | joy, connection, expression
-
Earth – Spleen & Stomach | nourishment, stability, support
-
Metal – Lung & Large Intestine | letting go, clarity, boundaries
-
Water – Kidney & Bladder | vitality, fear, deep reserves
In Five Element Shiatsu, the practitioner uses gentle pressure, stretches, and holds along energy pathways (meridians) to balance these elements within the body.
What makes it unique
Unlike more mechanical bodywork, this style focuses on:
-
Energetic diagnosis (feeling where energy is excess or deficient)
-
Emotional and psychological patterns linked to each element
-
Supporting the person’s constitutional balance, not just symptoms
What a session may involve
A session is usually done fully clothed on a futon or mat, and may include:
-
rhythmic pressure with palms, thumbs, or elbows
-
meridian stretches
-
gentle rocking or joint mobilisations
-
quiet holds to regulate the nervous system
The intention
The goal is to help restore the natural flow of qi (life energy) so the body can regulate itself physically, emotionally, and energetically.
Many people experience:
-
deep relaxation
-
improved digestion and sleep
-
emotional release or clarity
-
a stronger sense of grounding and vitality.
Shiatsu Online
Five Element Shiatsu is traditionally hands-on, working through physical pressure along meridians. However, aspects of its philosophy and therapeutic intention can still be offered at a distance by focusing on awareness, guidance, and energetic practices.
Here are the main ways practitioners adapt it remotely:
1. Meridian-Guided Self-Shiatsu
The practitioner guides the client (usually over video) to apply gentle pressure along specific meridian points on their own body.
For example:
-
pressing along the Lung meridian for grief or breathing support (Metal element)
-
massaging the Kidney meridian for grounding and vitality (Water element)
You essentially become the facilitator and observer, helping the client sense where energy feels stagnant or depleted.
2. Five Element Assessment & Coaching
Five Element Shiatsu includes a diagnostic conversation looking at patterns in:
-
emotions
-
energy levels
-
digestion, sleep, stress
-
seasonal rhythms
From this, the practitioner suggests:
-
meridian stretches
-
breathing practices
-
lifestyle adjustments aligned with the element needing support.
3. Meridian Stretching & Movement
Clients can be guided through makko-ho meridian stretches (a classic practice used in Shiatsu).
Each stretch supports a pair of meridians and their corresponding element.
For example:
-
forward folds for Bladder/Kidney (Water)
-
chest-opening stretches for Lung/Large Intestine (Metal).
4. Breathwork & Nervous System Regulation
Because shiatsu works strongly through the parasympathetic nervous system, remote sessions often include:
-
guided breathing patterns
-
body scans
-
slow grounding practices to help regulate energy flow.
5. Energetic Work
If the practitioner is also trained in modalities like Reiki, distance energy work can be incorporated. This complements the Five Element framework by working with the subtle body and intention.
What the session becomes
A remote Five Element Shiatsu session is usually a blend of:
-
energetic guidance
-
self-shiatsu
-
breath and movement
-
elemental lifestyle insight
So while the direct touch is absent, the client still experiences the principles of Shiatsu:
awareness, flow of qi, and rebalancing the elements.
